THE STORY OF EVERYONE, SOMEONE, ANYONE AND NO-ONE

There was an important job to be done and Everyone was sure that Someone would do it.
Anyone  could have done it, but No-one did it.
Someone got angry about that because he thought that it was Everyone’s job.
Everyone thought that Anyone could do it, but No-one realised that Everyone wouldn’t do it.
It ended up that Everyone was angry with Someone because No-one did what Anyone could have done!

This is a different way to explain and understand indefinite pronouns. Here you will find some grammar notes if you prefer a traditional explanation.

WRITING A GUIDED POEM

You can write a five-line poem easily. Just follow these instructions.

1. On the first line write a noun of your choice
2. On the second line write two adjectives joined by and to describe this noun
3. On the third line write a verb and an adverb to describe this noun in action
4. Start the fourth line with like or as followed by a comparison
5. Start the final line with if only followed by a wish

Below there are two examples of such poems

Home
Warm and Sweet
Keeping me safe
Like fire in a cold snowed day
If only I could be there forever

Pain
Scary and horrible
Hurting quickly your hearth
Like claws in your arms
If only pain doesn't exist

INTENSIFICADORES DE ADJETIVOS

Utilizamos los intensificadores (+ + +) para añadir fuerza, para intensificar el significado de los adjetivos.
Por otra parte, podemos utilizar lo que conocemos como mitigadores (+/++)  para reducir, disminuir o moderar el significado del adjetivo al que se refieren.

EASILY CONFUSED WORDS

REMEMBER AND REMIND

Los verbos remember y remind pueden causar confusión, sobre todo al traducirlos al castellano, pero no deberíamos tener problemas al utilizarlos si tenemos en cuenta una serie de aspectos.

Hay dos aspectos importantes en los que debemos fijarnos:

1. Para traducir acordarse de sólo podemos hacerlo con remember. Así, podemos sustituirlo por recordar sin que varíe el significado

Debes recordar cerrar la puerta / Debes acordarte de cerrar la puerta
You must remember to close the door.

2. Usamos remind con una persona, es decir, si quieres usarlo debe haber un alguien y se puede descartar “to remember”.

Os recordamos que está prohibido fumar.
We remind you that smoking is forbidden.

Observa como contrastamos los dos verbos en estas dos oraciones similares, pero muy distinta
A) They don’t remember her address. (no se acuerdan de su dirección)
B) They don’t remind me her address (no me recordaron su dirección)

ACHIEVE, MANAGE AND REACH

Estos tres verbos son fácilmente confundibles si los traducimos como alcanzar, pero hay pequeños matices en su uso que hacen que los traduzcamos de distinta manera para saber cuándo hay que utilizarlos.

1. Achieve: Lo utilizaremos cuando queramos decir que algo se obtiene, se consigue o se logra con esfuerzo o dificultad.
My sister hopes to achieve all her goals
(Espera alcanzar o conseguir sus objetivos)
We achieved a great deal for our workers.
(Alcanzamos, conseguimos un gran acuerdo)

2. Manage: Expresamos la idea de lograr, “ser capaz de “, “poder”.

We managed to find a beautiful place to camp
(Fuimos capaces de encontrarlo)
Do you manage to connect the speakers?
(¿Eres capaz de conectarlos?)

3. Reach: Con este verbo expresamos que se consigue llegar a algún lugar complicado.

They reached the shore through the storm.
(Llegaron a la orilla, alcanzaron la orilla)
Please, bring me the ladder. I can’t reach the shelf
(No llego a la estanteria, no alcanzo)
